Dr. Mumtaz Maher is a visionary, a
surgeon par excellence. The pioneer of minimal access surgery in Pakistan, Dr.
Maher performed the country’s first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1991. Since
then he has made his mark in the field of laparoscopic surgery by performing
advanced procedures for the treatment of hernias, colorectal diseases and
obesity.

Over the years he has made significant
surgical contributions to the diseases of the digestive tract, pancreas,
obstructive jaundice and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Maher introduced the concept of
specialty oriented patient care and developed clinics in breast, thyroid and
colorectal surgery at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi. Since
their inception in 1991 these clinics have provided surgical treatment to a far
greater number of patients than any other hospital in the country. In 2007 Dr.
Maher initiated a training program for qualified surgeons in the disciplines of
breast, thyroid and laparoscopic surgery. He has served as the General Secretary of
the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and is one of the
founding members of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA). He is a
life member of the Pakistan Society of Surgeons and the Asia Pacific Hernia
Society and is presently the Vice President of the Society of Laparoscopic and
Endoscopic Surgeons, Pakistan. |
